Economy of Thanjavur

Agriculture and Emerging Farming Trends

Thanjavur, known as the “Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu,” is a major agricultural hub with paddy as the primary crop, supported by banana, coconut, pulses, sugarcane, and maize. With 58% cultivable land, farming follows the Kuruvai, Samba, and Thaladi seasons.
Although agriculture shapes the region, only 7% of the population is directly involved, while the city serves as a key grain trading center for the Cauvery Delta. Organic farming is growing in popularity, and almond cultivation is emerging due to the district’s favorable climate and soil conditions.

Handicrafts & Arts

The region is famous for its bell metal and bronze craftsmanship, producing metal plates, idols, bowls, and decorative items. Pith work, known for delicate models of temples, deities, birds, and garlands, is another signature art of Thanjavur.

Banking & Services

The city hosts all major nationalised and private banks, each offering widespread ATM facilities. Tourism, service-based industries, and agriculture-related trading contribute significantly to Thanjavur’s growing economy.

Timeless Beauty of Thanjavur

Thanjavur, the “City of Temples,” is famous for its stunning architecture and rich heritage. The majestic Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a symbol of Chola brilliance. Other sacred sites like Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Airavatesvara Temple, and Swamimalai Temple attract devotees and history lovers alike. Beyond temples, Thanjavur offers royal palaces, traditional art, music, dance, and the world-renowned Tanjore paintings — making it a perfect destination for culture, spirituality, and timeless beauty.

Transportation

Thanjavur is well-connected by road, rail, and air facilities. Major highways like NH 83, NH 36, NH 136, and NH 67 link the city to Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai, and other key destinations, while frequent government and private buses operate from both the Old Bus Stand and the New Integrated Bus Stand.
