Harela

Harela is an important and traditional festival celebrated in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It marks the arrival of the monsoon season and the beginning of the agricultural cycle. The festival is mainly celebrated by sowing seeds such as wheat, barley, and maize in small containers at home. After about ten days, the green shoots are cut and offered to gods as a symbol of prosperity and good harvest. People place the green Harela leaves on the heads of family members as a blessing for happiness and long life. The festival also promotes love for nature and encourages tree plantation. Many communities organize cultural programs and traditional rituals during the celebration. Families gather together to pray for peace, prosperity, and a successful farming season. Harela reflects the deep connection between people, agriculture, and nature in the Kumaoni culture. It is celebrated with great joy and devotion throughout the region.
