Thanjavur – The Pride of Tamil Nadu
Thanjavur
Thanjavur, known as the “Cultural Capital of Tamil Nadu,” is a city where history, art, and spirituality blend beautifully. Once the proud capital of the Chola dynasty, it is home to the iconic Brihadeeswara Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage site that continues to inspire awe with its grandeur and devotion.
Beyond its rich heritage, Thanjavur pulses with everyday life — from bustling old markets filled with handicrafts and bronze idols to the aroma of traditional South Indian cuisine that fills the streets. Festivals like Pongal and Navaratri light up the city with colors, music, and joy, reflecting its deep cultural spirit.
Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, admiring art, or savoring local flavors, Thanjavur offers a timeless experience that captures the true essence of Tamil Nadu.
About
The city’s name is believed to be derived from a portmanteau of “thanjam puguntha oor” (Tamil: தஞ்சம் புகுந்த ஊர்), which means “the town where refugees entered,” referring to its history of offering hospitality to newcomers.
According to another local legend, the name “Thanjavur” originated from “Tanjan,” an Asura (demon) who was slain at the site. In Hindu mythology, Tanjan requested the establishment of a beautiful city at the place where he was defeated. It is believed that the Asura was vanquished in what is now Thanjavur by the Hindu god Neelamegha Perumal, an incarnation of Vishnu.
Another theory suggests that the name “Thanjavur” might be derived from the name of a Mutharayar king, “Thananjay” or “Dhananjaya.” When combined with “Oor,” meaning town, it forms the name Thanjavur. The Kalamalla stone inscription, considered the earliest stone inscription, was made by the Mutharayar king Erikal Muthuraju Dhanunjaya Varma in 575 CE.
